Call to end violence against women
 
RAJSHAHI, Nov 26 (BSS)- Speakers at a press conference here today underscored the need for collective efforts to end all sorts of violence against women for restoring a gender parity based society to take the nation forward successfully.

In this regard, they mentioned that the government alone or any single organization isn't capable to free the womenfolk from violence and repression so community participation is very important in this regard.

Barendra Unnayan Forum (BUF), a network of nine development organizations working for establishing rights of the women, organized the workshop at GDRC conference hall marking the launching of protest fortnight to resist violence and repression against women.

Among others, BUF President Hasinul Islam Chunnu, Director of Niskrity Foundation SKL Muhammad Lalon, BUF Project Coordinator Roksana Ferdousi, Monitoring Officers Jakaria Jakir and Hafiz Uddin Pintu and President of Rajshahi Press Club Anwarul Alam Fatik spoke on the occasion.

Speakers said some social curses like child marriage, dowry, poverty, illiteracy and non-empowerment are the main causes behind most of the violence and repression against women so importance should be given on addressing the curses collectively side by side with the government efforts.

They emphasized the need for launching gender responsive education together with social campaign so that a social movement against violence against women could be forged.

Besides, they mentioned that the mass media both print and electronic can play vital role towards creating a women friendly atmosphere, through which, a repression-free, gender parity and equal scopes condition could be established everywhere in the society.

In the press conference, Hasinul Islam Chunnu portrayed a fortnight long anti- violence programs including street show, cultural function, awareness and rally which will be organized in 30 wards of the city corporation and four upazilas of the district till December 10.
