DHAKA, Dec 31 (BSS) - Bangladesh Railway (BR) sought additional allocation of Taka 340 crore from the Finance Ministry in the current 2011-12 fiscal year to link Tungipara of Gopalgonj district with its network.
The rail track will be built on Bhatiapara-Kashiani- Gopalganj-Tungipara route and rehabilitation work on Kalukhali- Bhatiapara route, a BR official source told BSS.
"The BR already submitted its proposal to the Railway Ministry for land acquisition and rehabilitation work for this expansion project," the official said.
The consultant of the project estimated that Taka 200 crore would be required for meeting the cost of land acquisition and Taka 140 crore for rehabilitation.
Project Director Rafiqul Alam said the land acquisition work would begin after getting the additional money. He, however, said that the development of rail stations, level crossings, signals and other related works are going on to implement the Taka 1,101- crore project, which is expected to finish by June, 2013.
The project involves rehabilitation of 85.25 kilometres rail line from Kalukhali (Rajbari) to Bhatiapara and construction of 63 kilometres rail track from Bhatiapara to Tungipara via Gopalganj.
BR has taken the project in response to the repeated demand from the people to link the railway network with Tungipara, where the graveyard of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is situated.
A BR source said the railway lines from Bhatiapara of Gopalganj and Kalukhali in Rajbari will re-establish the link with Faridpur, Jessore, Khulna and North Bengal.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project on August 18, 2009.
