Motive for murder of journalist couple detected: official

DHAKA, Feb 27 (BSS) - Police have unearthed the motive for the gruesome murder of TV journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi and hope to arrest the killers within the shortest possible time, a police official said today.

"I can tell you the motive behind the twin murders as we are
now sure about it. But it will not be wise for the sake of
investigation," Deputy Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB-
South) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monirul Islam said at
an unscheduled press briefing at DMP Media Centre.

Asked about block raid to arrest the killers, he said he did
not know of it, but hoped that the murderers would be arrested
very soon.

On February 11, unidentified assailants murdered private
Maasranga TV's news editor Sagar and his wife Runi, who was a
senior reporter of private TV, ATN Bangla, at their rented East
Rajabazar apartment in the capital.

Nowsher Alam Roman, a brother of slain Runi, on February 12
filed a murder case accusing unidentified criminals with Sher-e-
Bangla Nagar police station.

DB officials earlier said they kept an eye on several
suspects but none would be arrested until they could be "cent
percent confirmed" about anybody's involvement in the murders.

The murder case was shifted to the DB on February 16.

Officials familiar with the process said other law
enforcement agencies including Criminal Investigation Department
(CID) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had been asked to extend
their help in unearthing the mystery.
