SYLHET, March 23 (BSS) - The World Water Day was observed in the city under a joint programme of the Institute of Development Affairs (IDEA) and WaterAid Bangladesh on Thursday.
M N Ziaul Alam, Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet, attended the function as the chief guest, where S M Fazlul Karim Chowdhury, Director, Department of Environment, Shahid Iqbal, Superintend Engineer, DPHE, Shamim Ahmed, Assistant Programme Coordinator, WaterAid, and Nazmul Haque, Executive Director of IDEA, also spoke.
IDEA's project manager Pankaj Dostider briefed about the achievement in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector in the division and said hardware services like tubewells, pipelines, ring wells and disability friendly latrines were provided alongside software services such as awareness raising among garden workers.
Shamim Ahmed said his organization has been working to improve the livelihood of the poor and marginalized through water, sanitation and hygiene services and wanted to work for the people who have been excluded from WaSH services due to poverty, social isolation or for living in hard to reach areas.
He said it was not only the responsibility of the NGOs to provide services to the people in need, the government and tea estate owners have to come forward to ensure the WaSH rights of the tea pickers.
Divisional Commissioner Ziaul Alam appreciated the work done for the tea pickers but suggested for further expansion of the project to more tea gardens in order to benefit more people. He also said alternate technologies like rain water harvesting system should be introduced in tea gardens.
