govt believes in meaningful national election: Obaidul
 
RAJSHAHI, March 24 (BSS)- Communications Minister Obaidul Kader has said the present government believes in meaningful national election for upholding the pace of democracy in the country.

"We are hopeful about holding the next general election with spontaneous participation of all political parties," he said while addressing a meeting with the leaders of 14 parties combined at Circuit House in Rajshahi today as the chief guest.

The Minister said the election issue should be settled in the parliament through unanimous decision by all the representing parties in the greater interest of avoiding any chaos and undisciplined atmosphere in future.

Obaidul Kader urged the opposition parties to shun the destructive politics for maintaining a peaceful situation everywhere in the country coupled with fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the peoples in general.

"You shouldn't push the nation into endangered condition in the name of resisting the government or Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina," he reminded the opposition party.

He said honest people should come forward towards doing politics for debarring the intrusion of corrupt and dishonest people in the politics.

The minister said the government has started the midterm uplift programs and that will become visible upon its successful implementation within the next one year and the existing sufferings of the people could be reduced to a greater extent.

Mayor of Rajshahi AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Meraj Uddin Mollah, MP, Abdul Wadud Dara, MP, Shahriar Alam, MP, and leaders of 14 parties including Awami League were present at the meeting.

Obaidul Kader listed various development programs adopted by the present government and said most of its election pledges are going to be fulfilled within next two years.

He said the present government has been implementing short, mid and long- term development projects for building smooth, safe and peoples-friendly communication system in the country. He added that all the affected roads and bridges would be repaired, developed and removed before the next rainy season.

"We are working relentlessly to renovate, maintain and repair the affected roads and highways across the country," the minister said adding that some effective steps were already undertaken to free the road traffic from jam and accident.

Earlier, the minister visited some parts of Rajshahi- Chapainawabgonj highway to see for himself its present condition and addressed some roadside meetings and assured his all possible cooperation to meet up the local demands.
