DHAKA, April 7 (BSS)-The sit in programme of the journalists in front Home Minister's office scheduled for tomorrow to press home their demand for arresting the killers of journalist couple Sagor Sarwar and Meherun Runi has been deferred till May 6.
After a meeting with Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun at her official residence here, the leaders of the united journalist community briefed the reporters at Jatiya Press Club on the outcome of the discussion and called off their tomorrow's programme.
President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury told reporters " We have decided to call off our tomorrow's sit in programme as the minister gave us some specific assurances on arresting the killers of Sagor Sarwar and Meherun Runi and other demands,".
"We will hold the prgramme on May 6 if her assurances are not met by May 5 next", Sobhan said adding that they wanted to honour the minister and have confidence on her commitments.
The minister told us about the progress of investigation on the killing incident of Sagor and Runi and the killers would be arrested as soon as possible, he said.
He informed the reporters that the minister also asked the law enforcement agencies to re-investigate the killing incidents of journalists Humayun Kabir Balu, Manik Saha, Dipankar Chakraborty, Shamsur Rahman, Gawtam Das, Saiful Alam Mukul, Harun-ur-Rashid Khokan and Sheikh Belal Uddin and bring the killers to book.
She ordered the police to ensure safety of the journalists during their professional duties and stop all kinds of repression on them, Sobhan added.
BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DUJ presidents Omar Faruque and Abdus Shahid, joint secretary of BFUJ M Abdullah, DUJ general secretaries Shaban Mahmud and Baker Hossain, general secretary of Jatiya Press Club Syed Abdal Ahmed, president of Dhaka Reporters Unity Shakhawat Hossain Badsha and general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu were present during the briefing.
