Railway to recruit 4,892 persons

DHAKA, April 11 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Railway (BR) has got clearance from the government for recruitment of 4,892 more personnel for improvement of its services, officials involved in the recruitment process said.

The BR will release fresh advertisement for recruiting 2,790 out of 4,892 personnel soon.

Another proposal for one- year contractual appointment of 66 guards, 69 points-men and 88 booking clerks is awaiting approval of the Public Administration Ministry.

The railway appointed 1,771 men during the last one year and a half.

According to a ministry source, BR is limping with an acute shortage of manpower-about one third of the required staff for long, forcing it to shut down 106 stations across the country.

"The government has planned to recruit around 13,000 personnel for minimizing BR manpower shortage. The railway department published advertisement for recruiting 7,140 personnel and it has, so far been able to complete recruitment of only 1,771 persons," an official said, adding that BR has been failing to wrap up the entire recruitment process due to legal complexities.

Earlier, 135 loco masters and 101 station masters were appointed for a period of two years on contract basis.

After coming to power in 2009, the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took a comprehensive plan for the development of BR, which was in dire need for long a period.

Officials said the government has approved 34 projects involving Tk 24,000 crore to revamp the railway sector by setting up new tracks, upgrading lines and signaling system and converting some lines into dual gauge.

Earlier, Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta said the railway sector must be expanded and improved if the government wants to materialise its Vision 2021.

He said the government has approved the projects, under which locomotives and coaches would be procured and tracks and signal system would be improved.

The recruitment in the railway remained stopped for last twenty years.
