DHAKA, April 17 (BSS) - Presidium member of Awami League and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury MP today said resignation of Suranjit Sengupta from railway ministry created a new chapter in history of democracy.
She made this comment after paying homage to the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of 'Bangabandhu Bhaban' here at Dhanmondi marking the historic Mujibnagar Day today.
She said, "Suranjit's resignation has not damaged the image of the government rather added a new episode in the history of democracy".
Sajeda Chowdhury said "Suranjit Sengupta resigned taking all accountability of money scandal of his officials on his shoulder as the minister", she said.
Sajeda said that if he (Suranjit) did not suspend his APS and two other officials on charge of their misdeed and he himself would not resign from the post, then the government's image could be damaged.
Referring to a remark of opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia on entire government's resignation for corruption she said, "this is the matter related to Suranjit, not the entire government". Earlier, there were numbers of reports published against the APS of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia during BNP tenure, but none resigned, Sajeda alleged. "Our Prime Minister has created a history taking action regarding the matter, which took us one step forward on journey to democracy," she added.
