DHAKA, April 30, 2013 (BSS) - Bangladesh Bank (BB) today froze bank accounts of Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza at Savar and four owners of the garment factories housed in the building, collapsed on April 24, killing 388 and injuring hundreds.
The garment factories are New Wave Bottoms Limited, Phantom Apparels Limited, Phantom Teach Limited and Ether Textile Limited.
The central bank in a circular asked all banks concerned to stop all types of transactions from the accounts of the building and factory owners until further directive.
The circular, however, said the banks would allow payment of salary and other allowances to the workers under supervision of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The circular was issued following a court order, directing the central bank to take proper steps to stop transactions in bank accounts of Sohel Rana and the garment factory owners.
The High Court (HC) on Sunday directed the BB to freeze the bank accounts of the Savar building owner and the owners of garment factories housed in Rana Plaza so that they cannot withdraw money from the respective accounts without paying workers salaries.
It also directed the Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to pay the salaries and other benefits of workers from their respective accounts.
