THAKURGAON, Mar 27 (BSS): "Thakurgaon government college will be upgraded soon as the University College with the opening of honours courses in Physics and Chemistry. We are trying to make this college a model university college of the country," said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen.
The minister was speaking as the chief guest in the inauguration of honours courses, freshers reception and annual prize distribution ceremony held today at the college campus.
Presided over by Prof Dr Golam Kibria Mondol, Principal of the college, the meeting was addressed by Deputy Commissioner M Shahiduzzaman, Superintendent of Police (acting) Nahidul Islam, President (acting)of district Awami League Mokbul Hossain Babu and General Secretary of district Awami League and administrator of Zila Parishad Sadeque Qureshi as special guests.
The minister said that besides the upgradation of the college as University college an Engineering college would also be setup in Thakurgaon.
He also said that out of 12 projects at present being implemented by the Directorate of Educational Engineering in the country at a cost of Taka 30 crore, two projects costing Taka 7 crore are being implemented in Thakurgaon government college. The construction of the academic building and a 100-bed ladies hostel being implemented under the projects would be completed soon.
The Minister praised the role of the students of the college for maintaining the college campus as poster free and student unrest free campus.
He advised the students to be attentive in studies and sports so that they can compete in different fields of the society.
Later the minister distributed prizes among the champions of outdoor and indoor games.
In the annual sports of the college Anwar Hossain of first year honours became the champion among the boys in outdoor games and Jesmin Nahar of BBS first year among the girls.
In the indoor games Md Kayes of BA first year and Arfin Begum of second year honours became champions among the boys and girls respectively.
