KHULNA, April 01 (BSS) - The works in setting up the long cherished Khulna Agriculture University in the city's Daulatpur area is progressing fast as the University Grants Commission (UGC) had finalised the Development Project Proposal (DPP) of about Taka 150 crore in this regard.
Sources concerned to implement the project told BSS yesterday that the DPP would be sent to the Ministry of Education by a week and to the Planning Commission by this month.
According to district administration the university would be set up on 62 acres of land adjacent to Agriculture Extension Training Institute in the city's Daulatpur area with an estimated cost of Taka nearly 150 crore.
Initially, an administrative building, two academic bhabans, three dormitories, one medical centre, teachers'- students' centre (TSC), one cafeteria, mosque and a guest house would be constructed under the project. Later, residential houses would be set up for the teachers and employees in different parts of the city.
Sources said the university would be set up aimed at fulfilling one of the pledges made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a public meeting in the city's Khalispur area on March 5 last year.
Following the assurance, the Ministry of Agriculture formed an 11-member site selection committee headed by Khulna Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque for the university.
Later, the committee visited a number of places and ultimately selected the site at Daulatpur adjacent to the Agriculture Extension Training Institute and sent a letter to the ministry concerned on August 25 last year in this regard.
Sources from the Ministry of Education said following selection of the site for the university, the ministry sent a letter to the UGC on October 13 last year to prepare a DPP.
After the instruction, the UGC has submitted a project titled "Project to set up an agriculture university in Khulna" to the ministry in January this year with an estimated cost of Taka 171.25 crore. Evaluating the proposal, the scrutiny committee of the ministry requested the UGC to review the project and bringing the cost within Taka 150 crore.
Later, the UGC gave the responsibilities to the department of education engineering for bringing amendment to the project so that it would not exceed the cost of Taka 150 crore.
Talking to BSS recently Executive Engineer of the department Md. Shamsul Huda said that they had sent the proposal to the UGC last week bringing amendments to the DPP.
Deputy Director (planning and development) of UGC Nur Mohammad Molla said the reconstruction of the DPP has already been completed and the DPP would be sent to the ministry this week.
Sardar Elias Hossain, Chief Planning Officer of the Ministry of Education, told BSS that the amended DPP would be sent to the planning ministry by this month and after that it would be submitted to the pre-ECNEC and ECNEC on priority basis as the government is very much interested to set up the university.
He expressed the hope that the project would get ECNEC approval by the current fiscal year.
