DHAKA, Dec 11 (BSS) - Bangladesh is the 4th highest per-
capita rice consuming country in the world when people here eat
more rice than their neighbors in India and Myanmar.
Pakistan and Bhutan are not even in the top 20 rice-
consuming countries when Sri Lanka and Nepal got the 11th and
16th positions respectively, according to FAOSTAT, a regular food
supply data, prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization
FAOSTAT shows that Bangladeshi people consume 160 kilograms
of rice a year, which is over three times higher than the world
average of 50 kilograms. Brunei Darussalam, however, is the top
rice-consuming country in the world with its people consuming 245
Vietnam is the second in the row with an annual per-capita
rice consumption of 166 kilograms when Laos is one notch ahead of
Bangladesh with 163 kilograms.
People in Myanmar consumes 157 kilograms and in Sri Lanka 97
The major rice producing country Thailand is the 9th state
with an annual per-capita consumption of 103 kilograms. South
Korea is at the bottom of the top 20 list with its people eat 76
kilograms a year.
