GAIBANDHA, Mar 27 (BSS) - The great Independence and National Day was celebrated in the district on Monday in a befitting manner, with due respect and taking fresh vow to build a happy, prosperous and peaceful Bangladesh.
In the celebration of the day, district administration, various cultural organisations, political parties and educational institutions chalked out elaborate programmes.
The day's programme began through placing wreaths by district administration, police department, district Muktijodha Sangshad, district AL, district BNP, Jatiya party and other political parties, district BMA, educational institutions and socio-cultural organisations at the monument of the Poura Park of the town at midnight at 12.01 am.
The day was heralded with 31 gun salutes at the time of sun rising and national flag was hoisted atop all public and private buildings just after sun rise.
Later, an impressive march past by police, ansar, VDP, BNCC, scouts, students of Shishu Paribars, schools and colleges was held at the local stadium at 8.30 am.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Shahidul Islam and acting superintendent of police (SP) M. Hemayetul Islam took salute as the chief guest and special guest respectively.
Later, the district administration accorded reception to the freedom fighters and the members of martyred families at the auditorium of Zilla Parishad of the town here at 11.30 am with chief executive officer (CEO) of ZP Kallol Kumar Chakrabartee in the chair.
Local lawmaker Mahbub Ara Begum Gini addressed the function as the chief guest and DC M. Shahidul Islam, acting SP M. Hemayetul Islam and general secretary of district AL Abu Bakar Siddique were present as the special guests.
The programmes also included children's art and essay writing competitions on liberation war organized by Bangladesh Shishu Academy, documentary film show arranged by District Information Office, charity football match between district administration eleven and Gaibandha Pourashabha, arrangement of sports and games for the women by Mohila Krira Sangstha and holding of blood donation camp by Shandhani Donor Club.
Special prayers were offered in mosques and temples and improved diets were also served in the hospitals, jail and orphanages.
In the evening, a discussion meeting on the liberation war organised by district administration was held at the auditorium of District Shilpakala Academy (DSA) here with DC M. Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Local lawmaker Mahbub Ara Begum Gini addressed the function as the chief guest and acting SP M. Hemayetul Islam was present as the special guest while Nezarat Deputy Collector of District Collectorate Abul Kashem Mohammad Shahin was the moderator.
Later, a cultural function was also held on the occasion. The artistes of DSA rendered songs at the function.
