RANGPUR, April 2 (BSS) - The people of Rangpur will observe 42nd anniversary of the 'Dokhiganj Shwashan Baddhyabhumi Dibash (DSBD)' tomorrow through various programmes to pay due respect to 10 brilliant sons of the soil.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Binoy Krishna Bala is expected to inaugurate the newly built Smritisoudha tomorrow at the place of mass killing to show due honour to the best sons who made their supreme sacrifice for the freedom of the country.
Dokhiganj Smriti Sangrakhkhan Parishad (DSSP) will place wreaths at the Baddhyabhumi, arrange discussion in memory of the martyrs who were killed by Pakistani occupation forces on April 3 in 1971 and accord receptions to their family members.
The occupation forces with the help of their local collaborators, razakars, albadars, alshams and Beharis caught the 11 brilliant sons of Rangpur from different areas of the city on the day and shot 10 of them dead at Dokhiganj crematorium.
The martyrs are - Adv Mahfuz Ali Zorjes, Durga Das Adhikari, Dhirendranath Chaki Shantu, Khitish Halder, Gopal Chandra, Ehsanul Haque Dulal, Tofazzal Hossain Moharram, Rafiqul Islam Rafique, Uttam Kumar Adhikari, Dr Dinesh Chandra Bhowmik and an unknown Pagla Darbesh.
Senior Awami League leader and organizer of the War of Liberation Dr Dinesh Chandra Bhowmik escaped the death during the indiscriminate firing even after receiving eight bullet injuries but the other 10 brilliant sons of the soil were killed on the day.
Special prayers will be offered seeking divine blessings for souls of the martyred sons and candles will be lit demanding trial and exemplary punishments to the war criminals at the commemorating meeting.
DIG Binoy Krishna Bala, Additional Divisional Commissioner Narayan Chandra Barman, General Secretary of DSSP Adv Rothish Chandra Bhowmik, Freedom Fighters and local elite are expected to address the discussion.
Talking to BSS today, local people of Dokhiganj area asked for forging a rock- solid national unity like that in 1971 to ensure trial of the war criminals and expressed their firm belief that the present government would definitely complete the trial process.
