GAIBANDHA, April 4 (BSS) - Folk song and street drama, which are very popular to common people, are being staged in Sadar upazila in the district to create much awareness among the rural people on different social issues.
These are being performed by a group of artistes at different hat, bazaar and other places of 13 unions under the upazila in the district from August, 2010.
Sinnomul Mohila Samity (SMS), a local organization, is conducting it under a project entitled "Establishment of Hard-Core Poor and Extreme Minorities Women's Rights through Strengthening Union Parishad Standing Committees" funded by European Union.
A total of 10,000 hard core women, 1,000 extreme minorities women and 500 adolescent girls as well as their family members have been brought under the 3- year project.
The targeted women of the project are being made aware on dowry, early marriage divorce, polygamy, health, nutrition, education, family planning through folk song and street drama performance, said Murshidur Rahman Khan, an Executive Director of SMS.
Besides, they are also being motivated to human rights including family decision making, land right, equal wage rate, family law and access to GO and NGO services through folk song and street dramas, he also said.
Till March 31, 2012, a total of 30 functions of folk song and street drama were held at different places of the district under the project.
On Monday, such a function to create awareness on the above issues was held at Badiakhali Bazaar under the upazila where the group of the artistes performed folk songs and street drama pleasantly.
A large number of rural people including the women coming from the surrounding areas enjoyed the function with amusing mood.
Jahara Khatun, a woman of the bazaar, said we learned more things including women rights, dowry, the bad effects of early marriage and polygamy from the function.
Sadar UNO M. Mamunur Rashid told BSS that it is the best and effective way to make the rural people aware on different social issues and their human rights and urged all the NGOs to conduct such the programmes in rural areas of the upazila.
