RANGPUR, April 17 (BSS) - The historic Mujibnagar Day was observed here today with a call for working unitedly under leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in building the Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In observance of the Day, Awami League (AL) and its front organisations chalked out elaborate programmes including hoisting national and party flags at the part office, placing wreaths to the portrait of Bangabandhu, colourful rally and discussion meeting.
After bringing out the rally in the city streets, a discussion meeting was arranged at Katchari bazaar zero point with President of district unit AL and valiant Freedom Fighter Abul Mansur Ahmed in the chair.
General Secretary of district AL Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, President of city AL Shafiar Rahman Shafi, its General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal, senior AL leaders and leaders of its front organisations took part in the discussion.
Narrating importance of the Day in the national history of Bangladesh, the speakers said the War of Liberation got unconquerable dimension on this Day in 1971 when the exile provisional government took oath at Boidynath Tola in Meherpur.
In presence of local and foreign journalists, the national flag of Bangladesh was hoisted there after renaming Boidynath Tola as Mujibnagar in tribute to Bangabandhu who was declared as the President of the government-in-exile.
Syed Nazrul Islam took oath as acting President in the absence of Bangabandhu, Tazuddin Ahmad as the first Prime Minister, while Khandaker Mostaq Ahmed, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Quamaruzzaman as the cabinet ministers, they said.
