SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 28 (BSS) - The Jatiya Sangsad today passed three bills including the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Bill-2012.
The other two bills are- the Law and Order Disruption Offence (Speedy Trial) Bill-2012 and The Pornography Control Bill-2012.
State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanok on behalf of LGRD and Cooperatives Minster Syed Ashraful Islam proposed passage of the Local Government (City Corporation)(Amendment) Bill-2012.
Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun moved the rest two bills in the House.
The Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Bill- 2012 was passed in the House with a provision to hold elections of the divided Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) within 180 days instead of 90 days after passage of the bill.
It was necessitated to bring an amendment to the existing Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009 as the Election Commission expressed its inability to hold DCC elections within 90 days, the bill said.
The Law and Order Disruption Offence (Speedy Trial) Bill- 2012 was passed extending the timeframe of the Speedy Trial Act by another two years.
Presenting the bill, the home minister said the bill was introduced in the House with a view to improving law and order situation across the country through effectively tackling various crimes, ensuring speedy trial of the criminals and quick disposal of 2,269 pending cases under the law.
The Pornography Control Bill-2012 was passed making a provision for up to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Taka 500,000 for violation of the law.
Earlier on January 29, the home minister placed the bill in the House proposing harsh punishments to offenders to prevent degradation of moral and social values.
The Pornography Control Bill 2012 includes the provision for punishing offenders with different jail terms and fines.
According to the bill, the people giving wrong information and filing false lawsuits will be given a maximum jail term of three years.
It bans production, preservation, transportation and marketing of any kind of pornography and abettors or the offenders will also face punishment.
The bill empowers the government to hold trials of the offenders in a special court or tribunal through publishing gazette notification under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
