SANGSAD BHABAN, March 04 (BSS)- The Jatiya Sangsad today passed a bill establishing an institute titled 'Bangabandhu Daridra Bimochan O Palli Unnayan Academy' to conduct research on poverty alleviation and rural development.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam moved the bill in the House.

Placing the bill- 'Bangabandhu Daridra Bimochan O Palli Unnayan Academy Bill, 2012'-, the minister said the academy would act as a focal point of the government research as well as training. It will also serve as a multi-dimensional research institute at national and international level, he said.

The head office of the academy will be situated at Kotalipara of Gopalganj district and if necessary regional offices of the organization would be set up in any district.

The academy will impart training to jobless youths, small and marginal farmers and women on agricultural and non-agricultural trades to enhance their capacity to arrange self-employment, the bill said.

The academy will have a board of directors with the minister or the state minister of the LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry as the chairman, and a director general (DG) as the chief executive.

Earlier on January 31, 2012, the bill was sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives for scrutiny and report back to the House within seven working days.

The main objective of the bill is to make the academy a center of excellence in carrying out research on poverty alleviation and rural development.
