SANGSAD BHABAN, Mar 11 (BSS)- The Jatiya Sangsad today passed the Prime Minister's Education Assistance Trust Bill-2012 with a provision of forming Prime Minister's Education Assistance Trust for ensuring education for poor and meritorious students.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid proposed passage of the bill in the House as per recommendations of the parliamentary standing committee.
The bill has the provision of establishing the trust as a statutory body with its headquarters in Dhaka. Earlier on December 12, the cabinet approved the draft of the bill.
Under the Prime Minister's Education Assistance Trust Bill, poor students of schools, colleges and universities would be given financial assistance for continuing their studies.
In the bill, proposals were made to form a trustee board with the Prime Minister as its chief patron to conduct activities of the trust. Besides, a five- member advisory council would be formed to assist the trustee board.
Apart from this, the bill proposed formation of a 20-member trustee board headed by the education minister for a three-year term.
The objectives of the bill included providing education to the students from class-six to class 12 free of cost, involving government and non-government organizations and affluent persons in society in educational activities, preventing school dropout and ensuring quality of education.
Apart from this, the third report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Planning was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad. Committee Chairman H N Ashiqur Rahman placed the report in the House.
